Dr. William Figlesthaler’s run for Congress set to be the next chapter in a lifetime of triumphs, perseverance, and incredible resolve
When you think of the American Dream, you often think of a hard worker and “pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps” to accomplish an ultimate goal. This does not mean it is always going to be easy, and there will be obstacles, but the triumph and willpower to keep fighting and overcome them is one of the greatest stories ever told. This is the story of Dr. William Figlesthaler. His colleagues, employees, and patients call him “inspirational,” “an extraordinary leader,” “broad-minded,” “a visionary,” and “a workhorse.” Just his accolades alone as a renowned physician and surgeon would be impressive enough, but it is the years of hard work and dedication leading up to this feat that are even more extraordinary.
Growing up, he was the second eldest of seven children, and in his youth he worked in various blue-collar jobs, while juggling school and sports. By his late teens, Bill had gone from a Florida State Champion in the Pole Vault to a single father attempting to put himself through undergrad while caring for his three young children. From flipping pancakes at night to changing dirty diapers and studying anatomy in his spare time, he successfully found his way. Graduating cum laude with a BS degree from at Wake Forest University and then with honors from UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill, Dr. Figlesthaler was not only surviving but also thriving.
Upon graduating from medical school, he completed his residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center before settling down in Naples, FL in 1997. Since then, he has been a staple in urology. As the visionary behind his former practice, Specialists in Urology, the organization grew to include eight urology centers, five comprehensive cancer centers with over three-hundred staff members spanning from Cape Coral to Marco Island and offering robotic surgery, radiation oncology, chemotherapy, diagnostic radiology and pathology services. He was even featured on the Bravo network as a pioneer in robotic surgery before selling his practice in 2013. In 2016, he opened Encore Urology, which has already established itself as leader in providing state-of-the-art urology services in Naples, Bonita Springs and Marco Island. Dr. Figlesthaler is included in “Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors,” 12 years running as well as the “Florida Super Doctors.”
As a successful businessman who came from small beginnings, Figlesthaler realizes that success has nothing to do with personal gain or recognition, but “a successful business provides opportunities to its employees and a service to its customers.” He’s humble in his accomplishments and focuses on the bigger picture. Dr. Figlesthaler believes that each man’s life touches many others, so he enjoys giving back in many different ways. He has provided free exams and blood tests as well as informative seminars for his community. Figlesthaler is also an advocate for the American Cancer Society, Junior Achievement, Boys and Girls Club of Collier County, Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, Collier County among many others. In 2010, Dr. Figlesthaler was honored as a Business Hall of Fame Laureate for his strong business acumen and support of Junior Achievement of Collier County.
Not only a renowned doctor and philanthropist, Figlesthaler takes great pride in his role as a family man. A dedicated father of three and grandfather of four, he can often be found taking in a school play or tossing a football at the park. After his parents raised him to work hard, he instilled the same values in his own children, including his son Billy who is a decorated US Marine veteran having served two tours of combat during Iraqi freedom before pursuing his education and earning an MBA degree. Through all of his obstacles and medical duties, he has remained faithfully committed to what is most important.
His past experiences both professionally and personally as he sees the direction that the left is pushing our country have prepared and inspired him to enter the political world in pursuit of the district 19 Congressional seat. Having risen up through much adversity, Figlesthaler has become the successful and caring man he is today. Dr. Figlesthaler is ready to seize the moment and play his part in healing the country, much like he has healed his patients, built his businesses and raised his family right here in Southwest Florida.
Always the dark horse, the outsider, the long shot, yet Dr. Figlesthaler has proven himself time and time again. Even if the odds may be against him, Dr. Figlesthaler’s passion, drive, and focus are unmatched. As a conservative voice and strong supporter of President Trump, he is poised to take on the Washington elite and restore Southwest Florida with the steady hand they deserve.
